Anthropic Backers See Massive Gains Ahead of $2 Trillion IPO
Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant are already holding billions in paper wealth at the current private valuation, setting the stage for a historic public listing.

The race to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom is reaching a fever pitch as Anthropic prepares for a public listing expected this year. With a projected valuation of as much as $2 trillion, the IPO promises to be a massive windfall for the company's investors. Even before the stock hits the public market, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers are already worth billions at the firm's latest private market valuation of $965 billion.
The timeline of these investments spans several years, reflecting the rapid growth of the leading AI lab. In 2021, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt invested in the Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. By the time Iconique wrote a $6 billion check last year, the company's valuation had already surged to $183 billion. More recently, in early 2026, Sequoia made its first investment at a valuation of $380 billion. This progression highlights how quickly the stakes have escalated for those holding positions in the company.
At the current private valuation, the financial rewards for these backers are staggering. Eric Schmidt, who owns about 1% of the company, holds a stake worth nearly $10 billion. Iconiq's late-stage bet, which was worth $17 billion, has the potential to double again upon the IPO. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D and has invested over $1 billion, now holds a position valued at $14 billion. Even Sequoia, which entered the picture later with a $3 billion investment for about 1% ownership, has already more than doubled its initial outlay.
Other notable players in this high-stakes game include Sound Ventures and Spark Capital. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million. This commitment has resulted in a stake worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original investment remains a significant asset for the group.
Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, has seen its returns skyrocket. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate the extraordinary wealth generation occurring within the private markets before the public even gets a chance to buy in.
As the company moves closer to its public debut, the focus will shift from private valuations to market performance. Investors are watching closely to see if the $2 trillion target materializes, which would solidify the AI lab's status as a dominant force in the technology sector. The gap between the current private price and the potential IPO price represents a significant opportunity for those who have held their positions through the company's rapid expansion.
For now, the narrative is driven by the sheer scale of the existing gains. Whether the market validates the $2 trillion figure or settles for a lower price, the early and late-stage backers are set to walk away with historic returns. The coming weeks will be crucial as more details about the listing emerge, but the financial trajectory is already clear: Anthropic's backers are in a position of immense power and profit.
