The path to a public offering for OpenAI has taken an unexpected turn. Instead of rushing to the stock market, the artificial intelligence lab is negotiating a fresh round of private capital that would value the company at a staggering scale. According to reports from CNBC, OpenAI is working toward raising up to $30 billion in a single transaction. The proposed pre-money valuation for this round sits at $1.25 trillion. This approach would keep the company in private hands for the time being, allowing it to secure massive resources without the immediate pressure of quarterly public earnings reports.
The scale of this proposed transaction would set a new benchmark for the industry. If completed at a valuation exceeding $1 trillion, OpenAI would become the most valued private company in history. This figure reflects the intense investor interest in the technology sector, particularly regarding artificial intelligence. However, the deal is not yet final. Sources told CNBC that the specific terms of the agreement are still under negotiation. Consequently, the valuation and the amount raised could shift before any agreement is signed.
The funding round is being led by Coatue and investors in the UAE. The involvement of investors from the UAE brings an additional element to the negotiations. CNBC reports that the funding from that region could be linked to an agreement regarding computing infrastructure. This would provide OpenAI with access to more processing power, a critical resource for training advanced AI models. OpenAI declined to comment on the ongoing discussions regarding the funding round.
A timeline of events explains how the company arrived at this specific moment. In March, a funding round valued the maker of ChatGPT at $852 billion post-money. Following that raise, the company submitted confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June. A month prior to the current reporting, Bloomberg covered a similar effort to raise $30 billion, though that report cited a higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. The current reports from CNBC indicate a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, showing that negotiations on the exact figures remain active.
While OpenAI prepares for a private raise, other major players in the industry are looking toward public markets. Anthropic is reportedly close to filing its own paperwork for an initial public offering. Some reports suggest that Anthropic's public filing could appear at any moment. In May, Anthropic raised $65 billion at a valuation of $965 billion. That round was viewed by many observers as the final major funding event before a public listing. Anthropic also filed confidential paperwork in June.
The financial maneuvers of these two companies are closely linked in the minds of investors. Reports indicate that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut. This creates a competitive dynamic regarding valuations in the AI sector. The decisions made now regarding funding and market entry will determine which company establishes the stronger financial position as they move toward the next phase of their growth.
