The Kehlsteinhaus, the alpine retreat known as the Eagle's Nest, is largely destroyed.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann stated that the site would not remain a ruin and that the state would continue its work of remembrance. He made these remarks after local media reported that the structure was largely destroyed and urged the public to stay away from the area.
Dispatchers in Traunstein received a fire alarm from the building at 21:15 local time on Friday. Firefighters arrived to find the structure engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported, but the difficult terrain made it harder to bring the blaze under control. About 200 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene.
Officers apprehended a 33-year-old German man on a motorcycle near the site. Police are examining a possible motive and a criminal investigation is under way. Local police official Gerhart Holzinger told a press conference that there is currently no evidence of any other suspects.
The building stands at an elevation of around 1,800 meters above the town of Berchtesgaden. It was one of several buildings in the area used by Adolf Hitler and his entourage during World War Two. Hitler and senior Nazi officials planned the 1941 invasion of the USSR at his nearby Berghof residence. The Nazis completed the building in 1938, and it survived their defeat in 1945.
The site has since become a popular tourist destination and houses a mountain inn. Its official website describes it as a cautionary reminder of the inhumane Nazi dictatorship. Germany and Austria have long debated whether buildings linked to Hitler should be preserved, repurposed, or demolished.
In June, Berlin authorities announced plans to tear down one of Hitler's bunkers and build flats and offices on the site. In July, Austrian authorities refurbished the house in Braunau am Inn where Hitler was born and turned it into a police station.
