Police officers visited a home in Bloomfield, New Jersey, on Wednesday to address complaints about a popular Halloween attraction.
The visit occurred after a resident reported that nails were placed in the driveway of James Joanow, who has operated the display for more than 20 years. Joanow said his car rolled over the nails, causing a flat tire. He described the incident as the act of a non-fan.
Joanow said two officers arrived at the property and spoke with him respectfully. They informed him that a dozen anonymous complaints had been filed regarding the number of people walking around the site and the noise level. Joanow stated that the officers felt compelled to act on the reports. The attraction remained open until 10 p.m. that evening, which he said is the limit allowed by local ordinance.
The display features animated figures and themed sets, including a section Joanow calls the catacombs. He said the setup is designed to surprise visitors with elements they do not typically see at standard decoration sites. Joanow noted that the team begins planning in late July and continues decorating until Halloween night.
The property hosts thousands of visitors over the two weeks preceding the holiday. Joanow said the noise complaints are the primary source of friction with neighbors. He emphasized that the operation runs strictly between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Joanow said he has tried to be accommodating to the community. He noted that the run of the display is nearly over. The team will stay out until 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. on Halloween night to dismantle the setup.
The attraction is scheduled to remain open through Halloween night before it is taken down.
