Free Halloween event draws long lines to Bakersfield clinic parking lot

Bakersfield residents gathered early for Halloween festivities before the holiday arrived. On Sunday, hundreds of people attended a Trunk-or-Treat event hosted by Clinica Sierra Vista in southwest Bakersfield.

The line of visitors wrapped around the parking lot as families arrived. Participants dressed in creative costumes and explored vehicle trunks decorated with seasonal themes. Volunteers filled those trunks with candy for children and adults alike.

Grandmother Jamie Lujan attended with her family. She noted that the event cost nothing to enter. Lujan said the free format helped her bring everyone along without worrying about expenses. She stated that this approach helped the family avoid stress over what they could afford while staying at the event.

Community organizations also used the gathering for outreach. Hannah Weightman of Community Action Partnership of Kern participated in the event. She decorated her trunk with a Hocus Pocus theme and spoke with residents directly. Weightman explained that she wanted to show people what services were available in the area because many residents were unaware of those options.

Clinica Sierra Vista organized the event to mark its 55th anniversary. CEO Dr. Olga Meave said the clinic viewed the gathering as a way to give back. She acknowledged that financial strain affects many local families. Meave stated that the organization takes opportunities to provide free resources to the community because the current situation is difficult for everyone.
