The Dallas Stars defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Thursday night at American Airlines Center, capping a game defined by high volume shots and a decisive defensive stop.
The deciding sequence began in overtime when Jason Robertson blocked a Winnipeg scoring threat. Miro Heiskanen immediately recovered the puck and delivered a pass to Roope Hintz, who finished the breakaway at 3:47 of the extra period to secure the lead.
Earlier in the contest, the Stars faced a deficit after Kyle Connor and Gabriel Vilardi responded to an early second-period goal by Johnston. Hintz leveled the score with a six-on-five power play goal with two minutes remaining in regulation, keeping Dallas alive for the extra period.
The Stars generated 38 shots on goal compared to Winnipeg's 19, yet the Jets' goaltender Skinner recorded 35 saves to keep the contest close. The high number of shots for Dallas did not translate into an early lead, forcing the team to rely on a late surge to overcome the defensive pressure.
Defenseman Miro Heiskanen logged 29 minutes and 20 seconds of ice time, the highest total on the team. Thomas Harley played 28 minutes and 27 seconds, while Lian Bichsel recorded 17 minutes and 47 seconds. The heavy workload for the top two defenders occurred because Esa Lindell was scratched from the lineup for the game.
Heiskanen finished the night with five shots on goal, one blocked shot, and the winning assist. The statistical load on the blue line highlighted the reliance on the veteran pair to manage the offensive pressure, as no other defenseman exceeded 20 minutes of ice time.
