Dale Brown, the head coach who built the LSU men's basketball program into a national contender, died on Friday, Oct. 23. He was 90 years old. His death occurred just 48 hours after the university announced he had been selected to receive the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

Brown coached the Tigers for 25 seasons from 1972 to 1997. He accumulated 448 career victories, a total that remains the highest in school history. During that span, LSU captured four Southeastern Conference regular-season championships. The team earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament 13 times and reached the Final Four in 1981 and 1986.

The program's growth began when Brown arrived in Baton Rouge in 1972. He traveled across the state to promote the sport and recruit fans. In 1979, LSU secured its first SEC regular-season title since 1954. Two years later, the team advanced to the 1981 Final Four. Brown returned to that stage in 1986. He received the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award in 1981 and was named SEC Coach of the Year four times.

Brown coached several players who went on to professional careers. The roster included Shaquille O'Neal, a future NBA Hall of Famer, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Rudy Macklin also played under Brown's guidance. Brown was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

The university named the court inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center after Brown in 2022. In 2023, the venue was renamed Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to honor both former coaches. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry wrote on X that Brown put LSU basketball on the map and that his impact would last for decades.

Brown's family described him as a humanitarian who prioritized others. They said he always led with his heart and that he loved the people of Louisiana. In a 2025 interview with WAFB, Brown recalled a game against top-ranked Kentucky where all five starters fouled out. He told his remaining players they were now backups. LSU won that game. Brown credited his mother with teaching him to stand up for what is right.

Brown was born on Oct. 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota. He passed away eight days before his 91st birthday.
