The First Lady claims she acted as the exclusive intermediary to halt fighting in the occupied Ukrainian city, with the truce set to begin on October 29.

Melania Trump's office announced on Friday that she has secured a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The First Lady claimed she acted as the exclusive intermediary in the arrangement, a role that bypassed President Donald Trump and other senior administration officials. The localized pause in military action is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29, and will last for six days.
Under the terms of the agreement, both Russia and Ukraine agreed to stop all military operations within the city. The halt allows humanitarian aid to enter and enables the preparation of a civilian evacuation route. The office stated that the First Lady worked directly with leadership from both nations to define the terms. She is credited with starting the talks and aligning the parties on technical procedures, timing, and objectives.
In a statement, Mrs. Trump described the situation in Oleshky as grim. She called it a front-line war city on the brink of disaster, noting that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents. These individuals urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. The First Lady said residents have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. She asserted that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.
The plan involves non-military civilian leaders from both countries visiting residents in their homes to assess needs. Those who wish to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation. Mrs. Trump anticipated that some residents would choose to go to Russia while others would head to Ukraine. She also arranged for an American media organization to document the efforts of both teams, with Newsmax confirming its participation.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly commented on the announcement yet. However, Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news. He wrote on X that it was a major, positive step towards peace and that history would remember the First Lady's tireless work.
The announcement follows a phone call last week between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after Russia forcibly removed them. The ceasefire comes as President Trump's broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He recently told reporters that Russia has been fine on Ukraine, adding that they have not been doing much.
