The Department of Justice in the Philippines has confirmed that an active investigation is underway regarding an American man in his eighties who allegedly left child abuse materials in his Cebu province home. The probe focuses on Thomas Markle Sr., who is currently the subject of scrutiny by the department's anti trafficking task force. This development follows reports that his son, Thomas Markle Jr., alerted local authorities to the discovery of digital files.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, responded to the news with a statement sent to reporters on Friday. She described herself as deeply distressed by the allegations. A central point of her explanation is the timeline of when she became aware of the issues. She stated that she had been informed of troubling claims against her father as far back as 2018. According to the duchess, a letter containing these allegations was sent to the Metropolitan Police and the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit at that time.
Meghan said she was given assurances in 2018 that the claims were being investigated. However, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police noted that the force was not currently investigating Thomas Markle. The police said they were conducting internal enquiries to confirm whether their Royalty and Specialist Protection Command officers helped pass on the letter in 2018. This gap between the duchess's recollection and the police's current status remains a key open question.
The allegations originated when Thomas Markle Jr. reportedly found child abuse materials in storage boxes at the family home. He said he first noticed the files after switching on an old cell phone while his father was in the United States receiving treatment for a stroke and a blood clot. The younger Markle denied the claims against his father, calling them sick lies and stating he had never downloaded such materials in his life.
According to reports, Thomas Markle Jr. reported the findings to an FBI hotline, the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children, and state police in Pennsylvania in July. Philippine state media confirmed the investigation on Friday, noting that the Department of Justice was looking into reports involving the octogenarian American national. The agency reported that the anti trafficking task force was handling the matter.
Meghan also addressed the public's long standing questions about her distance from her father. She explained that her decision to limit contact was driven by a single purpose: to protect her children. She expressed hope that this motivation is now clear, despite what she described as media distortion over the years. She emphasized that her choice not to allow her father contact with their children was a protective measure.
In closing her statement, the duchess expressed her sincerest hope that justice would be fully served. She stressed that the priority in this case must remain the safety and protection of innocent children. The investigation in the Philippines continues as officials gather more details about the materials found in the Cebu residence.
