The Duchess of Sussex has publicly addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., stating that she is deeply distressed by reports that he possessed child sexual abuse images. Her spokesperson released the statement following a report by The Sun, which detailed claims by Markle Sr.'s son, Thomas Markle Jr., that a significant collection of such images was found at the elder Markle's former residence in the Philippines. While the father has denied the accusations, calling them sick lies, Meghan's intervention brings new details to light regarding her family's history with law enforcement.

The most significant revelation in her statement is that the Metropolitan Police informed Meghan of disturbing allegations against her father back in 2018. She explained that a letter sent to the Met and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, known as Rasp, was later shared with her. According to Meghan, the correspondence made troubling claims and she was assured that an investigation was underway. She stated that her decision to limit contact with her father and keep him away from her children was driven by a single purpose: to protect them. She expressed hope that justice will be fully served and that the safety of children remains the central priority in this matter.

Insiders indicate that Meghan refrained from speaking out at the time to avoid jeopardizing potential legal proceedings or exposing herself to litigation. It is understood that the Rasp unit passed the letter to her shortly after her wedding. The Metropolitan Police has clarified that it has not previously investigated Markle Sr. and is not currently doing so. However, the force is conducting internal inquiries to determine whether Rasp officers were involved in transmitting the document to the family.

According to The Sun, Thomas Markle Jr., who is 60 years old, told detectives in the Philippines that he discovered hundreds or possibly thousands of images on computers and mobile phones. These devices were stored in four large boxes at the family home in Cebu. Markle Sr. resided in this location until he returned to the United States in May following a stroke. The half-brother also contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which stated it will support Philippine authorities and look into any related federal violations of US law.

Officials in the Philippines have confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. Nicholas Ty, an undersecretary at the justice department, told the BBC that a taskforce in Cebu specializing in human trafficking and child sexual exploitation is handling the case. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla added that national police have secured Markle Sr.'s computer for a comprehensive digital forensic examination. He expects the results of this analysis to be available within approximately one week.

Thomas Markle Sr. is currently recovering in a rehabilitation center in Florida, where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after his left leg was amputated due to a blood clot. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the 82-year-old said he was shocked and hurt by the accusations. He insisted that he could never have done what he is being accused of and noted that the computers were no longer in his possession after he left Rosarito, Mexico, with his son in January 2025 to move to the Philippines for a fresh start.

The family dynamics remain complicated by the involvement of Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle. She has defended their father and accused Thomas Markle Jr. of fabricating stories for financial gain. Samantha alleged that the claims surfaced just days after their father cut off his son's funds. She also emphasized that the computers had been out of the father's control for two years, a gap she believes leaves significant room for tampering.

Markle Sr. has been estranged from the Duchess since he missed her wedding to Prince Harry due to health issues. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, who is seven, and Princess Lilibet, who is five. As the forensic results from the Philippines approach, the focus remains on how the findings will impact the family's public narrative and the legal proceedings in both the US and the Philippines.
