The smart bird feeder market has been active since 2020, with hardware costs and features stabilizing over time. Early Black Friday discounts now reduce prices for several popular models from Birdfy and Kiwibit, with sale prices ranging from $110 to $170.
The Birdfy feeder with a solar panel is listed at $127, reflecting a 29 percent discount. This rate applies specifically to the blue version, while the yellow model costs $13 more. A version without the solar panel is available for $110. The device requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection and includes a two-year warranty.
According to a Wired reviewer who has tested the products for years, the solar panel version is the preferred choice despite the higher cost. The reviewer noted that Birdfy’s panels have been reliable and prevent owners from needing to bring the unit indoors for charging. The reviewer stated that the device is a strong option for shoppers seeking a dependable feeder with an easy app and no major features locked behind a subscription.
The Kiwibit Feeder 2 with a solar roof is priced at $170, also a 29 percent reduction. This is not the company’s newest model, as the Feeder 2 Pro costs $220. However, the reviewer described the standard Feeder 2 as exceedingly well designed and noted it is at its lowest observed price. The unit features a 1.5-liter seed hopper split for two feed types, which lifts out by a top handle for refilling without removing the entire feeder.
The Feeder 2 captures 8-megapixel photos and 4K video, a quality level the reviewer rated as top-tier for this price point. The solar roof maintained charge in various weather conditions during testing. The app functions without the Kiwibit Plus subscription, although the reviewer observed a trend of moving more features behind the paywall. The device supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and carries a one-year warranty.
A third option is the Kiwibit 4K Feeder with auxiliary solar, available for $140, a 26 percent discount. It uses the same camera and hardware as the Feeder 2 but lacks the built-in solar roof. The included 3-watt solar panel mounts to the back of the wall mount. This option allows buyers to save $30 compared to the standard Feeder 2 while retaining Kiwibit’s build quality and image resolution.
