A strong ocean current killed a British mother in the Bahamas on Tuesday as she swam to save her two sons.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the sudden death of the 36-year-old woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. Officers opened an investigation immediately after the incident near the southern point of Bimini.
The family was snorkelling with the husband when a current swept both boys away. The mother swam toward them to assist and was carried off herself. Local responders pulled the two boys from the water. They were unharmed.
Police received a call shortly after 10 a.m. regarding an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Officers arrived to find she had already been transported to a local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts. The family had been swimming together before the current separated the group.
CPR was administered at the ferry dock after the woman was pulled from the surf. The police force stated that foul play is not suspected in the death. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact medical cause.
The UK Foreign Office said its officials are in contact with local authorities. A spokesperson noted that support is being provided to the family of the deceased.
