Apple will begin distributing iOS 27.2 next week, marking the first broad release of new iPhone software since the launch of iOS 27. The previous version, 27.1, was restricted to the new iPhone Duo hardware. This wider rollout introduces three distinct changes to core applications, focusing on video calls, audio management, and content filtering.
The most visible update expands the Dual Capture feature within FaceTime. Originally released with iOS 27, this tool allows users to display their front and rear cameras simultaneously during a video call. In the current version, the feature is limited to one-on-one conversations. iOS 27.2 removes that restriction, enabling group calls to utilize the same dual-view setup. Participants can tap the Flip button to activate the rear camera while keeping the front camera active.
The Apple Podcasts app receives a structural overhaul to its Up Next queue. The current single list will be divided into two separate sections. The top section, renamed New Episodes, will display the latest releases from shows a user follows. Below that, a new section called Continue Playing will list any episodes that have been started but not finished. A writer for 9to5Mac, who previously described the old layout as cluttered, said the new arrangement helps listeners keep better track of their content after testing the beta.
The Apple TV app on iPhone will also gain user profiles for the first time. While profiles have long been available on tvOS for Apple TV hardware, they have not previously appeared on iOS. Upon opening the app after the update, users will encounter a profile selection screen. This feature can be disabled if preferred. When active, the app tailors its content recommendations to the selected viewer. If a child's profile is chosen, the app restricts the visible library to age-appropriate series and movies from Apple. This setup aims to keep adult viewing queues organized and prevent children from encountering unsuitable material on a parent's device.
According to 9to5Mac, the update includes new features in a total of six iPhone apps. The release is scheduled for next week, following the limited availability of the previous version.
