iOS Update Split: Apple Withholds 27.1 From Most iPhones
The new software version is available exclusively for the iPhone Duo, while other models will move directly to iOS 27.2 next week.

Most iPhone owners will not receive the latest software update. Apple pushed iOS 27.1 over the air on the night before October 23, but the file is available only for the new iPhone Duo. Users on other models will see iOS 27.0.1 as the current version in their settings.
The company is skipping the 27.1 release for these devices. Owners of other iPhones will move directly to iOS 27.2 when that update arrives next week. This is an unusual move for Apple, as point releases typically bring features to all compatible hardware.
iOS 27.2 has been in beta testing for about a month. The update includes Suggested Actions in Messages and a new design for Apple Music. It also adds user profiles to Apple TV and a new Up Next queue in Apple Podcasts. FaceTime gains Dual Capture for group calls, and Siri AI will support more languages.
The split release appears to stem from engineering and secrecy needs. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo last month, but many details remained hidden until recently. By skipping a beta cycle for iOS 27.1, the company kept specific information private until the device launched.
The Duo requires custom iOS designs and features. Apple likely found it simpler to manage these elements internally without mixing them in with other models or unrelated updates.
Owners of other iPhones will not miss any features. The arrival of iOS 27.2 next week will not indicate that iOS 27.1 was overlooked. That version was never intended for their devices.
