Arsenal tied Manchester City for the top of the Premier League table on Saturday.
The Gunners defeated Everton 2-0 in heavy rain at the Emirates Stadium in north London. This result erased a three-point gap that had existed after eight matchdays. Both teams now hold 21 points. Manchester City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on the same day. It was the first league defeat of the season for the visitors.
Arsenal struck early in the first half. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner into the box. Jordan Pickford stopped the initial attempt, but Ezri Konsa bundled the rebound in from close range in the seventh minute. This goal ended a 13-game drought for set-piece goals for the club. Konsa scored his first goal for the team in the process.
The lead increased in the second half. Ben White, playing his 200th game for Arsenal, crossed to the far post. Gabriel headed the ball in during his 200th Premier League appearance in the 68th minute. Everton remains in ninth place following the loss.
At Villa Park, Nicolas Jackson scored twice for the home side. He opened the scoring in the sixth minute after John McGinn created the chance. Erling Haaland equalized shortly after halftime with a header. Jackson won it in the 60th minute by finishing under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Aston Villa moved up to sixth place with 11 points. This marked their third consecutive league victory over Manchester City.
Manchester City is currently appealing an independent commission's finding of 114 breaches of financial rules. The club denies wrongdoing. Jackson told TNT Sports that the team is working game by game.
Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Mathys Tel scored in the 87th minute to seal the win. Cole Palmer received a red card in the 80th minute. Tottenham moved to 12th place. Fulham defeated Coventry City 1-0 with an 80th-minute goal from Oscar Bobb.
