Manchester City conceded two goals at Aston Villa and dropped all three points, ending a perfect start to the Premier League season. The 2-1 loss marks the club's first league defeat of the campaign.
Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Villa. He opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Marc Guehi made a heavy touch. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City dominated possession in the first half but could not convert chances. Zion Suzuki stopped shots from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post before the break.
Erling Haaland leveled the score in the 52nd minute with a header from a Ndiaye cross. It was his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol hit the crossbar shortly after, keeping the match tight.
Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye crossed the ball from behind the defense, and Jackson placed a low shot into the net. Donnarumma appeared to have a chance to save the shot but failed to hold it.
The result leaves City vulnerable at the top of the table. Arsenal can move into a tie for first place if they beat Everton later on Saturday. Villa climbs to sixth in the standings with the win.
Unai Emery has guided Villa to a sixth victory in seven matches across all competitions. The win comes after the club lost six players who started last season's Europa League final. New signings Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have contributed to the team's current form.
Enzo Maresca had become the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches with a new club. City have now lost at Villa Park in four consecutive seasons. The defeat comes as the 10-time champions appeal a guilty verdict on over 100 financial charges from 2009 to 2018.
