The demand for an independent investigation into the security breakdown of October 7, 2023, reached its peak on Saturday as thousands gathered in Tel Aviv.

Organizers identified as the October Council, a coalition formed by the families of captives taken three years ago, staged the demonstration at the public plaza known as Hostages Square. The event took place just 72 hours before the country’s first general election since the start of the war in Gaza. The council stated on social media that the rally served as the culminating event of a three-year struggle to uncover the truth and establish a state commission of inquiry.

Political figures from the opposition joined the crowd, adding a layer of electoral strategy to the protest. Gadi Eisenkot, a center-right rival to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressed the demonstrators. He was greeted by chants asking who would be the next prime minister. Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, also participated. Dan Adin, a lawyer and citizen, described the flow of people from Rabin Square to Hostages Square on social media, noting the energy of the crowd.

The timing of the rally coincides with a tight race in upcoming polls. Current projections show Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc, which has held power since late 2022, running neck and neck with Eisenkot’s coalition. Neither side is projected to secure a majority of seats in the Knesset. The outcome of the vote may influence military decisions, particularly regarding potential strikes on Iran. Eisenkot is viewed as less inclined to resume military action against Tehran compared to his rival.

Tensions between the protesting families and the current administration center on the structure of the investigation. Netanyahu’s coalition has refused to establish an independent body, instead proposing a political commission. Under that proposal, half the members would be appointed by the government and the remainder by opposition legislators. Opposition leaders have signaled they would boycott such a panel, arguing that a commission appointed by politicians lacks the necessary neutrality.

The October Council warned law enforcement ahead of the event about potential disruptions. The group sent an urgent letter to the Police Commissioner following alerts about attempts by entities linked to the coalition to provoke the rally. The council’s primary goal remains to hold specific officials accountable for the failures that preceded the Hamas attack and to deliver justice for affected families.
