Maria Juncal will perform in Tel Aviv on November 4.

The show, titled A Different Perspective, begins at 8:30 p.m. at Arison Hall, 7 Saadia Gaon St.

Juncal belongs to the sixth generation of the Borull family, a lineage of Spanish flamenco dancers and musicians. Her great-great-grandfather, the guitarist Miguel Borrull Castelló, died in 1926. His daughter, Julia Borrull, was a Spanish gypsy dancer known for a dramatic style. In 1917, the artist Julio Romero de Torres painted Julia mid-dance in a work called Alegrias. That piece now hangs in a museum in Córdoba, Spain.

The Tel Aviv date arrives exactly 100 years after the death of Juncal's great-great-grandfather. She intends to present her own interpretation of the art form. Juncal said she aims to keep the performance flamenco in its purest form while adding her personal approach.

Juncal has visited Israel for years and built a following there. She performed in Tel Aviv last year during the war with Iran. The event is produced by Silvia Baro Productions and the Suzanne Dellal Center. The venue changes from the center's usual home to Arison Center because the primary site is undergoing renovation.

Since 2021, Juncal has lived in Mexico City. She opened a tablao flamenco there and continues to tour globally. Four local musicians will join her on stage. Guitarist Piti de Triana will play, while singers Yael Horwitz and Miriam Levy will perform. Percussionist Itay Asterchan will provide rhythm. Alejandro Ponce designs the costumes. Nico Kremenchusky, Ika, and Ana Iturbide handle photography. Tal Gershon manages design and digital media. Dudi Bali oversees sound, and Alexi Merchasin controls lighting.

In a recent interview, Juncal said the past years have required maintaining enthusiasm and strength. She called returning to Israel a joy both artistically and personally. She noted that the conflict is often seen in Spain through a lack of firsthand experience. She described reactions there as a kind of performance, while those who seek common ground speak with prudence. Juncal said she is fond of the new show because it involves collaborating with local artists who love flamenco. Tickets are available at suzannedellal.org.il/en/ and sdc.smarticket.co.il.
