Kylian Mbappe is positioning himself as the leading candidate for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, citing his record-setting performance at the recent World Cup in North America. The ceremony will take place Monday in London, where the French forward aims to secure the individual honor despite a season that ended without a team trophy at either the club or international level.
Mbappe’s primary argument rests on his status as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He reached 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who holds 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. The player won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said in a statement last month.
His club performance with Real Madrid also contributed to his individual statistics. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward finished as La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring charts with 15. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," he said.
The lack of team silverware remains the main vulnerability in his bid. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France placed fourth in the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. Rival candidates have stronger trophy records, with Lamine Yamal winning the World Cup and La Liga for Spain and Barcelona, while Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe maintains that the award recognizes individual excellence rather than team success. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told radio station RFI. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also voiced support for his star striker. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
Historical precedent poses a hurdle for the Frenchman. In the past decade, every Ballon d'Or winner had lifted at least one major trophy during the eligibility period. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 award after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title. The last player to win without a major team trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who broke Lionel Messi’s four-year winning streak. Mbappe, who placed third in the voting in 2023, is making his ninth nomination for the prize.
