Mike Sannella and Sharon Jenkins are competing to replace Mayor Rebecca Jones as the leader of San Marcos. Both candidates bring extensive experience to the office, having served as deputy mayors and city council members.

Jones, who is currently running for county supervisor, endorses Sannella. The San Diego Republican Party also backs Sannella. Jenkins has the support of the San Diego Democrats. Despite these endorsements, both candidates describe the race as local rather than partisan.

Sannella has served on the city council since 2022. Jenkins completed a 12 year tenure on the council before leaving office. Sannella cites public safety, parks and recreation, and economic development as his primary priorities. He stated that his team remains focused on performing the work residents expect in those specific areas.

Jenkins identifies traffic flow as her top priority. She noted that traffic is the most common topic among residents. Jenkins described her approach as nonpartisan, noting that she has maintained that stance for 26 years. She hopes the election will be remembered for its civility.

The election will determine the next mayor of San Marcos. Voters will also decide on races that may influence the balance of power in Congress and the local city council. Both candidates emphasize continuity over change, stating they aim to hold the course for the city.

Sannella said he and his supporters tried to stay outside of national politics. Jenkins agreed, stating she has always adopted a San Marcos first mentality. The candidates will continue campaigning until the vote is cast.
