Storm Boelo is set to bring winds exceeding 80 miles per hour to the northern United Kingdom this weekend. The Met Office has issued its second most severe warning, the amber alert, for Scotland and the north of England down to Carlisle. This warning remains in effect from 9 pm Saturday until 9 pm Sunday. A separate amber warning covers the north east of Northern Ireland until 10 am Sunday.

The storm marks the second named weather event of the season. It follows Storm Austen, which impacted the south west of England on Friday and is now moving eastward. At one point on Friday, 31,000 homes in the south west lost electricity. By Saturday morning, more than 3,700 properties in that region remained without power, according to National Grid data.

TransPennine Express has advised passengers to avoid all but essential travel on Saturday and Sunday. Avanti West Coast has strongly urged customers not to travel north of Preston on Sunday. Ferries also face widespread disruption. The Met Office has cautioned that power outages similar to those seen in the south west could occur in the northern amber warning zones.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist for the Met Office, identified wind as the primary hazard. He noted that strong gusty winds will affect Northern Ireland, northern England, and Scotland throughout the day, strengthening in the evening. Burkill advised the public to stay indoors due to risks from flying debris and crashing waves. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above seasonal averages, but the combination of wind and rain will make conditions feel unpleasant.

Heavy showers are forecast for northern parts of the UK. A large yellow warning for wet and windy conditions covers the entire north from midday Saturday to 9 pm Sunday. Wales and parts of western and southern England face a further warning for heavy rain from 11 am to 11 pm Saturday. Winds are expected to peak Saturday evening. The wet weather should clear overnight in many areas, though rain will persist in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The event follows a record-breaking summer characterized by extreme heat and wildfires. The UK experienced its hottest summer on record this year, with five heatwaves and a record 40 days above 30 degrees Celsius. Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned on Friday that the UK could face a winter of greater flooding. He stated that unexpected events are becoming more common, while denying that the government was lagging in civil preparedness.
