Google Messages Adds Cloud-Based Scam Shield to Android App
The new tier uses Gemini models to analyze message context and links before users tap, relying on Private AI Compute to keep data encrypted.

Google is expanding its spam defenses in the Messages app for Android by introducing a higher tier of security. The update, announced earlier this month, adds an Enhanced Protection mode alongside the existing Standard and No protection options.
The new feature set includes Scam Detection, which utilizes cloud-based Gemini models to evaluate the context of message threads. Google states this method identifies scammer intent faster than on-device checks, particularly when communicating with unknown senders. To safeguard privacy, the system processes encrypted data within Android's Private AI Compute. This secure space is described as private to the user, meaning even Google cannot access the message content during analysis.
Enhanced link protection is the second component. It pairs the on-device Gemini Nano model with real-time web signals to verify unfamiliar links. This specific capability is currently available on the Pixel 10 and newer, the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8, and other select devices. A third change redesigns warnings for links from unsaved numbers, providing users with more context and time to pause before tapping.
Users must manually opt in to the new tier. The settings menu under Protection & safety now lists three distinct choices. Enhanced protection is the new default recommendation, while Standard protection retains previous on-device blocking. The No protection option is labeled as not recommended.
The feature was identified in the latest beta build of Google Messages, version 20261020_00_RC00. The rollout is underway for eligible Android devices as of this week.
