The New York Knicks will attempt to secure their first victory of the season when they host the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The matchup pits a 0-3 New York team against a Detroit squad that has won its opening three games.
Sportsbooks list the Knicks as 4.5-point home favorites. The total points line for the contest is set at 218.5. Detroit has started the season with wins over the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers. The Pistons defeated the 76ers on Sunday night behind a 26-point performance by Cade Cunningham.
New York has dropped its first three games by single-digit margins. The defeats came against the 76ers, Celtics, and Orlando Magic. This marks the first time a defending champion has started 0-3 since the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011-12 season. Jalen Brunson leads the Knicks in scoring with an average of 22.7 points per game.
The Pistons are missing center Jalen Duren for Tuesday’s game due to a strained hamstring. Duren is expected to miss at least two weeks of action. Despite his absence, Detroit has maintained a strong defensive presence. The team is holding opponents to an average of 105.7 points per game while scoring 118.3 points per contest.
Josh Hart is averaging 9.0 rebounds per game for New York. He has recorded at least seven rebounds in all three of his appearances this season. Hart’s rebounding average has been at least 7.4 per game in each of his last four professional seasons.
Detroit has a 4-1 record against the spread in its last five meetings with New York. SportsLine’s computer model projects the Pistons will cover the 4.5-point spread in 53% of simulations. The model also forecasts that Hart will finish the game with 9.2 rebounds.
The Pistons’ recent success includes a win over the Celtics early in the season. New York’s losing streak includes a close defeat to Orlando. Both teams enter the game with distinct motivational factors, with New York seeking to end its winless start and Detroit aiming to extend its perfect record to four games.
