Harry Kane scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025-26 season, a total that secured his place as the winner of the Ballon d'Or. The award marks the end of a 25-year drought for English players, with the previous recipient being Michael Owen in 2001.

The Bayern Munich striker produced his most prolific campaign to date. He netted 61 goals in 51 matches across all competitions for his German club. These efforts helped Bayern Munich complete a domestic double by winning both the league and the cup. His performance established him as the leading goalscorer in Europe by the end of the season.

Kane's influence extended to the international stage as well. He served as the captain for England during the World Cup. He scored six goals during the tournament and guided his team to the semifinals. His performance combined clinical finishing with the leadership that has defined his career as the nation's all-time leading marksman.

The award ceremony took place in London on Monday. Kane took the stage to accept the prize, which he called extra special due to the location. "Wow, wow, wow! I am almost speechless," he said. He noted that being in London felt like a good omen for the evening.

He thanked those who voted for him, acknowledging that the competition was tough. "Some world-class players in the room tonight," Kane said. He congratulated all the winners and nominees, adding that the event showed what determination and hard work can achieve.

The voting process was highly competitive. Kylian Mbappe broke World Cup scoring records during the tournament. Lamine Yamal played a key role in helping Spain win the World Cup. Despite these achievements, voters selected Kane because his excellence lasted the entire season rather than peaking in a single tournament.

Alexia Putellas of Spain won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for the third time. She earned the award after winning a treble with Barcelona in the 2025-26 campaign. This included the Spanish Super Cup. Putellas left Barcelona in July after 14 years to join London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League.

Kane is now 33 years old. His career path included early struggles at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was sent on numerous loans. He developed into a complete center forward capable of scoring every type of goal. He also functions as a playmaker, making him one of the most versatile strikers of his generation.
